Smoking in Budapest
In order to preserve the health of non-smokers, legislation also prohibits smoking in public areas and enclosed spaces in Hungary. If you visit Hungary and smoke, it is a good idea to be aware of the rules on smoking, as smoking in restricted zones is penalized. Always make sure, wherever you go in the city, that you light it in a designated smoking area.
Where can you buy a tobacco product?
- You can only buy tobacco products at the National Tobacco Shop.
- Tobacco shop windows and entrances are covered with signs and distinctive window decorations that are easy to spot.
- 1 box of cigarettes costs 1100-1500 HUF depending on the brand.
- Persons under the age of 18 are not allowed to enter the tobacco shops! Not even with an adult escort!
- In tobacco shops, young shoppers can ask for their ID cards or other official documents proving that they are 18 years old.
Where is smoking prohibited in Budapest?
Smoking is only possible in restaurants and cafes in the designated areas. If you want to light it, be sure to indicate in the smoking area when you book a table.
When walking in the city, make sure you avoid the following places with a cigarette.
Never smoke here:
- on public transport
- in subways
- within a 5-meter radius of a public transport stop
- playgrounds, schools, kindergartens within 5 meters
- within a 10-meter radius of hospitals and health care facilities
Penalty for smoking in a prohibited place
Employees of the Public Area Inspectorate will be fined up to HUF 30,000 for violating the smoking
